The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy®

The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy® (ATMAT) is founded on the holistic approach to healthcare of the ancient Maya. ATMAT (also called Womb or Maya Massage) is a non-invasive, external massage treatment of the abdomen and back—that softens musculature, adjusts internal organs to their proper position and aligns pelvic bones—enhancing the vital flow of blood, lymph, nerves and chi throughout the entire body.

Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy® is best known for the correction of the prolapsed, fallen, or tilted uterus and for the prevention and treatment of benign prostate enlargement in men, as well as for the relief of many common digestive disorders. Promoting optimal health, ATMAT includes massage, anatomy and physiology, herbology, nutrition, as well as emotional and spiritual healing.

Dr. Rosita Arvigo, an American Naprapathic Doctor, learned these techniques from her mentors, Don Elijio Panti, a Maya Medicine Man and Hortence Robinson, a traditional midwife of Belize, Central America with whom she apprenticed for many years. Midwives and healers of Central America agree that most female troubles are caused by the ‘wandering womb.’ Don Elijio would say: “The uterus is the woman’s center. If her uterus is not in proper position and good health, nothing in her life will be right. She will be as out of balance as her uterus.”

Benefits for Women:

Normally the uterus leans slightly over the bladder in the center of the pelvis, about one and a half inches above the pubic bone. It is held in this position by muscles, the vaginal wall and ligaments that attach it to the back, front, and sides of the pelvis. Uterine ligaments are made to stretch to accommodate the ever-changing uterus. The uterus changes in size during menstruation, during pregnancy and also moves freely when the bladder or bowel is full. Uterine ligaments and muscles can weaken and loosen, however, causing the uterus to fall downward, forward, backward or to either side.

A uterus in any of these positions is called a tilted or prolapsed uterus and modern medicine has little or nothing to offer women with this problem. Options may include using the birth control pill, muscle relaxants, or surgery and women are generally told, “your uterus is tipped, but that is normal and don’t worry about it.” However, women have a list of physical and emotional symptoms that can be addressed and prevented with the simple, noninvasive massage techniques of ATMAT. When reproductive organs shift out of their optimal position, they can constrict normal flow of blood and lymph, and disrupt nerve connections. Just a few extra ounces sitting on blood and lymph vessels can cause havoc throughout the different systems in the body. By shifting the uterus back into place, homeostasis, or the natural balance of the body, is restored in the pelvic area and the surrounding organs. Toxins are flushed and nutrients that help to tone tissue and balance hormones are restored to normal order. This is essential for the entire life span of women’s health!

Old adhesions from invasive treatments to the pelvic and abdominal area, including fibroid tumors, endometriosis, and cesarean delivery are diminished when addressed by ATMAT. In addition, digestion, urinary and bladder problems can be helped.

Benefits for Menarche and Beyond:

Supporting young women in having a healthy relationship with their body, their womb and their cycle from the beginning—is a revolutionary act. Maya Abdominal Therapy for young women supports a healthy cycle from the start, so that monthly bleeding is not painful and uncomfortable, rather understood, respected and even enjoyed. Because a cornerstone of the Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy® is self-care, young women learn from the very beginning, how to tend to their own health and well-being. Women utilizing the power of their bleeding time to connect with themselves, leads to tremendous insights. These insights are the difference between women surviving or thriving, which is the difference between a culture surviving or thriving.

Benefits for the Childbearing Continuum:

Uterine/Abdominal Therapy has been used cross-culturally since time immemorial to support women during pre-conception, pregnancy and the postpartum period.

When the uterus is aligned in her optimal position, hormones are regulated and normalized, congestion and stagnation are cleared, and a healthy uterine lining may develop—all of which support fertility and pregnancy. Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy® is also beneficial for men, to increase sperm count and motility.

During pregnancy, ATMAT supports the growing uterus to be in her optimal position within the pelvic bowl—this simultaneously supports growing babies to come into optimal fetal positioning. ATMAT tonifies uterine muscles, causing them to coordinate well during labor and birth. ATMAT nourishes uterine ligaments that are stretched to their fullest at this time, so that they may healthfully return to their former size after birth. Common discomforts of pregnancy may be relieved with ATMAT treatments, including: heartburn, indigestion, heaviness in the pelvis, stagnation, headaches, pain around the round ligament and in the low back and more.

After birth, abdominal treatments are an essential part of postpartum recovery. ATMAT sessions at this time are focused on returning the uterus and bladder to their optimal positioning, supporting the return of the uterine ligaments to their pre-pregnant length and strength, as well as deeply nourishing the whole body for the tremendous work just completed. Postpartum abdominal sessions support the digestive system as well, which is recovering from slowed digestive motility of pregnancy, labor and birth, and recovering from the weight of the enlarged uterus pressing into the stomach as well as the colon. Abdominal sessions can be received during the early postpartum period. Women who have had a cesarean birth may begin postpartum sessions of ATMAT as soon as the incision site is healed over—early on is an ideal time soften scar tissue and to prevent adhesions from developing.

Benefits for Peri-Menopause, Menopause and Post-Menopause:

ATMAT is wonderful in supporting women during peri-menopause, menopause and beyond—by relieving pelvic congestion, increasing circulation, improving digestion, aiding in the absorption of nutrients and calming the central nervous system. ATMAT helps to maintain the strength and integrity of the pelvis against prolapse of organs later in life. During peri-menopause, ATMAT helps balance the hormones and encourages a thorough cleansing of the uterus of any residual toxins. It is important for our wombs to be cleansed out at this time, as through menopause our wombs shrink to an almost pre-pubesent size. A wise woman once told me “A post-menopausal uterus is like a Diamond in the rock,” it is much smaller in size, but the power and wisdom has been potenized. ATMAT treatments during this time help connect a woman to the wisdom of peri-menopause and menopause, as well as her innate, queenly wisdom of this stage of life.

Benefits for Men:

Men benefit greatly from Maya Abdominal Massage techniques as well. By ensuring a full blood supply to the prostate, the abdominal massage helps to prevent swelling and inflammation. Men report that they can feel a distinct difference in blood flow after a treatment. Not only does ATMAT relieve prostate swelling, but also helps alleviate varicose veins, premature ejaculation, some impotency problems and the need the frequently urinate.

Digestive and Emotional Benefits for Men and Women:

Individuals with digestive disorders benefit greatly from Maya Abdominal Treatments. Many common disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Indigestion, Constipation, and heartburn are treated with antacids, muscle relaxants, and a variety of other medications. These treatments address symptoms, not the causes. By using the techniques of Maya Abdominal Massage, the upper abdomen is also given a deep, thorough massage to loosen the tight muscles around the stomach and the arteries that feed the digestive and eliminative organs with their vital blood supply. The diaphragm is gently massaged allowing relaxation of tight musculature.
